英國語文科 ► Yearly Program Plan

Major Concerns

I. Major Concerns

      I. Promote positivity at school, nurture positive values

              1. Nurture positive values and attitudes

              2. Foster compassion among peers

II. Promote life-wide self-directed learning, develop thinking skills and build up information literacy skills

              1. Promote life-wide self-directed learning

              2. Develop thinking skills and build up information literacy skill

Aims

  1. This program renews our commitment to the teaching of English, not merely as an academic examination subject, but also as a gateway to the outside world, a medium of pursuing knowledge, a valuable asset in working life and a means of seeking pleasure and entertainment.
  2. It continues to aim to provide students with assistance in acquiring the four basic skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking for developing proficiency in English.
  3. It also aims at enhancing students’ both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation regarding the learning of English Language
  4. A new emphasis is on teachers’ professional development and holistic curriculum planning to suit the blended teaching modes and optimized senior curriculum.

Present Situation

  1. Strengths

a. As most students are keenly aware of the importance of English to their future prospects, they are eager to improve their English and ready to work hard.
b. The School recognizes that a good command of English is a basic need of students and thus provides plentiful resources for them to acquire language skills.
c. Professional expertise is available from a panel of well-qualified and experienced teachers who are all enthusiastically committed to improving students¢ standard of English.
d. The English Panel functions efficiently under a system of Level Coordinators who work in collaboration with teachers concerned to monitor students¢ learning
e. The Department is well-equipped with a supply of teaching aids and materials including CDs, DVDs, reference books, teaching aids, etc.
f. The learning of English is also promoted through a variety of activities held in class, the English Society and outside school.
g. The collaboration of different departments to carry out cross-curricular English teaching helps students learn English through different subjects.

  1. Weaknesses

a. Most students have inadequate grammar groundwork and limited word power.
b. Coupled with their low standard is a lack of initiative and confidence among some students to practise using the language on their own. Most read without much critical thinking and are reluctant to speak up in English.
c. Since the medium of learning for all other subjects in most classes is Chinese, students¢ exposure to English is restricted to English lessons except the EMI classes in S1, S2 and S3. This limitation in exposure accounts for their general weakness in reading, writing, speaking and listening.
d. Large class size makes it difficult for individual attention to be provided as desired. The heavy teaching and marking workload of teachers, most of them being assigned to teach three classes, is another handicap.
e. The setting of Language Room does not fit for English group activities outside lesson time and the equipment is outdated which does not support the contemporary teaching trend.

f. The half-day timetable and online lessons due to COVID places hurdles for weaker learners who rely on teachers’ face-to-face guidance.
